"I have little patience for Consultants who try to impress people with their knowledge and succeed only in confusing and controlling them," Dean Derby says.  "The important thing is not to waste time, but to clarify as simply as possible, the issues that are relevant."

The design of Standard Valuations' reports reflect this commitment to simplicity and clarity.  The centerpiece of the report is the scatter charts.  A scatter chart is a rectangular chart on which hundreds of different Investment Managers' rates of return and risk are plotted.  "High and Left" is the best place for a manager because that signifies high rate of return ("high") and low risk ("left").

There are separate scatter charts for balanced, equity, and fixed income managers as well as real estate, mortgage and global funds, Mutual Funds, Equity Styles such as large cap growth, large cap value, mid cap, all cap, etc. as well as custom mixed balanced funds.

Depending on how deeply a Board of Trustees wants to probe, a unique feature of the report analyzes each stock purchased or sold for the fund.  It compares the execution price with the trading range to determine whether the price paid or received was appropriate.  It also monitors commissions to determine whether the transaction charges were reasonable.

Looking at a scatter chart comparing rate of return and investment risk, one can quickly see how a manager is performing compared to hundreds of other managers.
